Sustainable Tourism

Totally South Tourism supports the concept of sustainable tourism, which we believe means 'seeking compatibility between economic growth, the conservation of natural and cultural assets, visitor experiences, and the values and priorities of local communities'.

While the term sustainable is often overused or even misused, we are generally referring to a process where the goal is to accommodate the needs of industry, community, government and natural environments in a way which both enhances the visitor's experiences and the community's lifestyle and quality of life.

When aiming for sustainable tourism, the following principles should be considered;

  • respecting the value of shared resources for all Tasmanians
  • empowering people to provide for their social, economic and cultural wellbeing through tourism
  • valuing the environment for its beauty, biodiversity and ecological values which sustain and enrich the lives of Tasmanians and visitors
  • building partnerships to foster cohesive, vibrant and healthy communities; and
  • developing integrated and appropriate planning for the long-term health and viability of the tourism industry.

Further information relating to the concept of sustainable tourism can be found at the Department of Environment and Water Resources website.
